Cost of Living [2022 WIN World Survey]

This portion of the 2022 edition of the WIN World Survey (WWS) explored perspectives on cost of living. The WWS is conducted annually by the Worldwide Independent Network of Market Research (WIN International), of which Leger is a founding member.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS: COST OF LIVING [2022 WIN WORLD SURVEY]

Financial Situation: 25% of respondents are living comfortably, 36% of respondents are neither comfortable nor struggling and 36% of respondents are living comfortably. 24% of Canadians and 28% of Americans say they are living comfortably.

Cost of Living: As a result of the cost of living:

  • 48% of respondents have already reduced some expenses (including 51% of Canadians and 50% of Americans)
  • 29% are actively planning to reduce expenses (including 23% of Canadians and 23% of Americans)
  • 19% are not planning on making changes (including 21% of Canadians and 22% of Americans)

As noted by Vilma Scarpino, President, WIN International, “This year, for the first time, the WIN World Survey focuses on the financial situation of citizens. The historical time we’re living, affected by the pandemic, the rising of conflicts in many areas of the world, the climate emergency, and insecurities towards the future, forces us to take increasingly more into consideration people’s social and financial wellbeing as well. Research on many different sectors and aspects of life cannot overlook people’s spending possibilities. And it’s not only about finance: the rising costs of living affect people social wellbeing too. Interestingly, this study highlights more differences between countries than many others do. While there are some common widely accepted stands (e.g., agreement on climate change is high in every country) the financial situation differ significantly between different parts of the world. WWS data might serve therefore, together with other sources, as a starting point for institutions, governments and NGOs to work on improving financial stability.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

From October 9 to December 10, 2022, over 29,000 people from 36 countries were surveyed using CAWI/CATI/F2F/TAPI online survey methods. Leger was responsible for data collection in Canada and the United States.
