Perceptions of Crime in Metro Vancouver

Leger recently surveyed Metro Vancouver residents about crime in Metro Vancouver, including their perspectives on safety, support for safety initiatives, experiences with crime and violence, perceptions of government groups and more.

SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS OF OUR SURVEY ON CRIME AND VIOLENCE IN METRO VANCOUVER INCLUDE…

  • 78% of residents are concerned about the state of the downtown core closest to where they live.
  • 62% of residents feel the downtown core closest to where they live has declined in the past year.
  • 71% of residents feel violence and crime have gotten worse compared to pre-pandemic.
  • 47% of residents say they visit the downtown core closest to where they live less often due to increased crime and violence.
  • 28% of residents have personally feared for their safety and 24% have personnally experienced aggressive behaviour in the past six months.  
  • 58% of residents think tougher penalties for those who are found guilty of committing violent offenses would make communities a lot safer.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A total of n=650 online surveys were conducted among Metro Vancouver residents aged 18 or older via Leger’s LEO panel.
  • The survey was conducted from April 7 to 12, 2023, using computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) technology.
  • The results were weighted according to age, gender, and region in order to ensure a representative sample of the population.
