Perceptions of Canada’s economic state are an important driver of how consumers will spend (or not spend) in the coming months. Leger conducts an annual economic confidence survey which measures Canadians’ current and future confidence in the Canadian economy, their household finances and more.
Our overall report highlights the key findings at a national level and includes trending analysis and interprovincial comparisons. Separate reports are available that dive deeper into the study’s findings in British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS: CANADIANS’ PERSPECTIVES ON THE STATE OF THE CANADIAN ECONOMY
CONFIDENCE IN THE CANADIAN ECONOMY
- Confidence in the Canadian economy has improved from 2021, but remains softer than pre-pandemic. Quebecers and British Columbians are most optimistic.
- 51% of Canadians believe Canada is in a recession. Albertans are most likely to believe this, and Quebecers are least likely.
CONFIDENCE IN HOUSEHOLD FINANCES
- Confidence in current household finances remains largely steady. British Columbians and those from the Prairies are less optimistic than a year ago, whereas Ontarians and Quebecers are more optimistic.
- Canadians’ confidence in their future household finances is increasingly polarized, with a growing minority expecting a change for better (21%) or worse (18%) over the next 6 months.
- Reflecting slightly stronger confidence in the economy overall, Canadians’ financial worries continue to decline despite the pandemic.
