From September 20 to 22, 2024, we surveyed Canadians to learn their opinions and perceptions on Justin Trudeau’s leadership and potential elections.

Key highlights of our survey include…

  • 62% of Canadians believe that Justin Trudeau should resign as the leader of the Liberal Party.
  • 64% of Canadians disapprove of Justin Trudeau’s job as Prime Minister. This proportion is significantly higher among conservative voters (93%). Liberal voters still seem satisfied with Justin Trudeau’s work—83% approve of his performance, which is significantly higher than in the general population (28%).
  • Among Liberal voters, 18% think Chrystia Freeland should replace Justin Trudeau as the party leader and 13% think it should be Mark Carney. Other names surveyed receive minimal support. Nearly half of Liberal voters (46%) do not know who should replace Justin Trudeau.
  • More than half of Canadians (54%) believe that Pierre Poilievre’s Conservative Party of Canada will win the next federal election, while only 16% think that Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party of Canada will win. The confidence of Conservative voters is stronger than that of Liberal voters. Specifically, 91% of Conservative voters believe their party will win the next election, compared to 49% of Liberal voters who feel the same about their party.

Methodology

This web survey was conducted from September 20 to September 22, 2024, with 1,556 Canadians aged 18 or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel. A margin of error cannot be associated with a non-probability sample in a panel survey.

For comparison purposes, a probability sample of this size yields a margin of error no greater than ±2.48%, (19 times out of 20) for the Canadian sample.
