Climate Change and Net Zero Emissions by 2050

  • 74% of Canadians and 59% of Americans are worried about climate change.

  • 68% of Canadians and 53% of Americans support the goal of reaching Net Zero carbon emissions in their respective countries by 2050.
  • After being told that the goal of Net Zero emissions by 2050 will require Canada/the United States to significantly reduce its reliance on oil and natural gas development and exports, 64% of Canadians and 49% of Americans support the goal.
  • After being told that the goal of Net Zero emissions by 2050 will likely increase the cost of gasoline, diesel fuel and natural gas in Canada/the United States, 53% of Canadians and 40% of Americans support the goal.

68% of Canadians and 53% of Americans support the goal of reaching Net Zero carbon emissions in their respective countries by 2050.


METHODOLOGY

This web survey was conducted from April 23, 2021 to April 25, 2021 with 1,548 Canadians and 1,003 Americans, 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel.

For comparison, a probability sample of 1,548 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.49%, 19 times out of 20, while a probability sample of 1,003 would have a margin of error of ±3.09%, 19 times out of 20.

  • To what extent are you worried about climate change?
  • This past week an international summit of the world’s major economies gathered to discuss the issue of climate change. Canada/The United States, along with other countries, agreed to a goal of reaching Net Zero carbon emissions by the year 2050. This means any new carbon emissions entering earth’s atmosphere will be offset by a reduction in emissions. Do you support or oppose the goal of Net Zero emissions for Canada/the United States?
  • For Canada/the United States, the goal of Net Zero emissions by 2050 means the country will have to significantly reduce its reliance on oil and natural gas development and export, which will mean changes to Canada’s/U.S.’s economy. Do you support or oppose the goal of Net Zero emissions for Canada/the United States?
  • When the Canadian/American economy shifts away from its reliance on oil and natural gas to achieve its Net Zero goal by 2050, it will likely mean the cost for gasoline, diesel fuel and natural gas will increase in price. This means the price for certain things will increase during this transition. Do you support or oppose the goal of Net Zero emissions for Canada/the United States?
