October 13, 2021

This webinar is part of Leger’s Conversations with Leger’s Academic Committee webinar series. These webinars explore the post-pandemic world from the perspectives of Leger’s Academic Committee members.

Each webinar features a 30-minute discussion with a member of Leger’s Academic Committee, followed by a 15-minute question-and-answer session.

On October 13, 2021, at noon Eastern Time, we hosted a webinar featuring Dr. Jacques Nantel, Professor Emeritus, HEC Montréal

The Canadian retail landscape is changing and will change further in the years to come. The truth is that it has little to do with the COVID-19 crisis: the current pandemic is only accelerating a process that was already underway.

There are four data points to keep in mind:

  • Consumers are spending as much as before the pandemic.
  • Sales in stores are down by 12%.
  • E-commerce accounts for 15% of consumer spending.
  • 50% of all e-commerce purchases are still made on U.S. sites.

However, there are avenues for retailers to regain traction, which Dr. Jacques Nantel shared with participants in this webinar.
