The Alberta Economy, Alberta Politics and More

May 4, 2023

Leger recently surveyed Albertans about their perspectives on the Alberta economy and Alberta politics, including their voting intentions, whether things are going in the right or wrong direction, who they think would make the best premier and more.

SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS OF OUR SURVEY ON THE ALBERTA ECONOMY AND ALBERTA POLITICS INCLUDE…

  • With less than a month to go before the next election, the gap between the two main parties is narrowing. A nearly equal proportion of decided voters would vote for the NDP (45%) vs. the UCP (43%).

  • 36% of Albertans believe Rachel Notley would make the best Premier of Alberta, followed by Danielle Smith (26%).
  • 56% of Albertans feel things in Alberta are going in the wrong direction.
  • 31% of Albertans think the government of Alberta has done an excellent, very good or good job handling the Alberta economy over the past few years. 35% feel it has handled the economy poorly
  • Albertans think the UCP and the NDP would perform equally in terms of growing the Alberta economy and working with the industry to grow the economy.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A total of n=1,000 online surveys were conducted among Albertans aged 18 or older via Leger’s LEO panel.
  • The survey was conducted from April 28 to May 1, 2023, using computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) technology.
  • Using data from the 2021 Census, the results were weighted according to age, gender, and region in order to ensure a representative sample of the population.
  • As a non-random internet survey, a margin of error is not reported. If the data were collected through a random sample, the margin of error for a sample size of n=1,000 would be ±3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
