The War in Ukraine: One Year In

February 24, 2023

On behalf of Postmedia, Leger surveyed Canadians about their perspectives on the impacts of the war in Ukraine from February 17 to 19, 2023.

SOME OF THE KEY HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR SURVEY ON THE IMPACTS OF THE WAR IN UKRAINE, APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR AFTER IT STARTED INCLUDE…

  • 53% of Canadians say they or their family has been personally affected by the war in Ukraine to some extent.
  • 71% of Canadians support Ukraine in the war and would like to see it ultimately prevail.
  • 50% of Canadians think the federal government should do more in terms of imposing more sanctions on the Russian economy and specific sanctions on individual Russian leaders and politicians.
  • 67% of Canadians agree Ukraine is only the beginning regarding future Russian aggression and its attempt at territorial expansion using force.
  • 29% of Canadians feel sporadic fighting will continue for years, with Russia continuing to occupy parts of Ukraine.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A web survey was conducted among 1,521 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, via Leger’s online panel, LEO.
  • The data was collected from February 17 to 19, 2023.
  • As a non-probability online survey, a margin of error is technically not reported. If the data were collected through a probability sample, the margin of error would be ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20.
  • Using data from the 2021 census, the results were weighted according to age, gender and region, as well as by education and presence of children in the household in order to ensure a representative sample of the population.
