The Alberta Sovereignty Act and Alberta Politics

December 2, 2022

Leger recently surveyed Albertans about their perspectives on the Alberta Sovereignty Act, opinions on the provincial government’s plan, provincial voting intentions and more.

SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS OF OUR SURVEY ON THE ALBERTA SOVEREIGNTY ACT AND ALBERTA POLITICS INCLUDE…

  • Albertans outside of Edmonton and Calgary have the highest support for the Alberta Sovereignty Act.
  • 32% of Albertans agree the Alberta Sovereignty Act is necessary to stand up for Alberta against the federal government.
  • While over half (54%) of Albertans agree the affordability initiatives introduced are just an attempt by Premier Danielle Smith to “buy votes”, more Albertans agree (49%) than disagree (23%) that these measures will improve Albertans’ lives.
  • Slightly more decided voters would vote for the NDP (47%) than the UCP (44%) if a provincial election were held today.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A total of n=1,001 online surveys were conducted among Albertans aged 18 or older via Leger’s LEO panel.
  • The survey was conducted from November 24 to 28, 2022, using computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) technology.
  • Using data from the 2021 Census, the results were weighted according to age, gender, and region in order to ensure a representative sample of the population.
  • As a non-random internet survey, a margin of error is not reported. If the data were collected through a random sample, the margin of error for a sample size of n=1,001 would be ±3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
