Canadians’ Perspectives on MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying)

20 July 2022

From June 30 to July 3, 2022, on behalf of Postmedia, Leger surveyed Canadians about their perspectives on MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying).

The survey explores Canadians’ attitudes toward MAID and support for/opposition to extending MAID in certain circumstances.

SOME OF THE KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR SURVEY ON MAID INCLUDE…

  • 51% of Canadians support extending MAID to mature minors with an incurable medical condition.
  • Support for extending MAID to mature minors falls to 39% if their parents/guardians were opposed to the mature minor’s decision.
  • 40% of Canadians support parents/guardians opting for it for their terminally ill child.
  • 65% of Canadians support allowing adults the ability to request it in advance of a worsening cognitive condition.
  • Support for individuals with a serious mental health illness accessing it sits at 45% among Canadians.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A web survey was conducted among 1,501 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, via Leger’s online panel, LEO.
  • The data was collected from June 30 to July 3, 2022.
  • As a non-probability online survey, a margin of error is technically not reported. If the data were collected through a probability sample, the margin of error would be ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20.
  • Using data from the 2016 census, the results were weighted according to age, gender and region in order to ensure a representative sample of the population.
