Canada Day: Canadians’ Celebration Plans and Canadian Pride

June 29, 2023

Leger recently surveyed Canadians about their perspectives on Canada Day, including whether they plan to celebrate it, the meaning it has for them, and whether or not they are proud to be Canadian.

SOME OF THE KEY HIGHLIGHTS FROM OUR SURVEY ON CANADA DAY INCLUDE…

Canadian Pride: 81% of Canadians are proud to be Canadian.

The top reasons for being proud to be Canadian are Canada’s universal healthcare (41%), natural beauty and landscape (40%) and freedom and equality for everyone (40%).

The top reasons for not being proud to be Canadian are the state of the healthcare system (38%), economic inequality and poverty (35%) and the rise of political extremism (33%).

Celebrating Canada Day: 54% of Canadians say they will celebrate Canada Day this year, 33% will not, and 13% are not sure.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A web survey was conducted among 1,512 Canadians 18 years of age or older. Respondents had the option of completing the survey in English or in French and were randomly recruited using Leger’s LEO online panel.
  • The data was collected from June 23 to June 25, 2023.
  • Technically, a margin of error should not be associated with a non-probability sample (Web panel in this case). However, for comparative purposes, a probability sample of 1,512 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.51%, 19 times out of 20.
  • The results were weighted according to age, gender, mother tongue, region, education and presence of children in the household in order to ensure a representative sample of the Canadian and American population.
