Changes in the Alberta NDP

January 26, 2024

On January 16, 2024, Rachel Notley, Leader of the Alberta NDP and former Premier of Alberta, announced that she would be stepping down as leader of the party once a successor has been chosen for her in a leadership election.

From January 19 to 22, 2024, we surveyed Albertans to know more about their opinions after the announcement of Rachel Notley stepping down as the leader of the Alberta NDP.

Some of the key highlights of our survey about the Alberta NDP include…

  • The greatest proportion of Albertans (36%) feel that Rachel Notley stepping down as leader of the NDP will not make a difference when it comes to the NDP’s chance to form government in the next election.
  • NDP supporters are split in their opinion on whether it will help (18%) the party’s chances or hurt them (24%).
  • Albertans believe that the next leader of the Alberta NDP should have both business experience (56%) and have already been elected to the legislature (34%).
  • Over one-quarter of Albertans (26%) indicate they are likely to vote for the NDP in the next election, while a similar proportion are unsure but willing to consider it (22%).
  • Almost one-quarter of Albertans (23%) agree that Rachel Notley should run as a federal MP, while nearly one-third (31%) disagree.

METHODOLOGY

An online survey was conducted among 1,001 Albertans, 18 years of age or older, from January 19 to 22, 2024. The data was weighted according to the Canadian census figures for age, gender, and region within the province.

No margin of error can be associated with a non-probability sample. However, for comparative purposes, a probability sample of 1,001 respondents would have a margin of error of ±3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
