Trumpists in Canada

March 17, 2025

Léger conducted a survey on behalf of Le Journal de Montréal, Le Journal de Québec, and TVA regarding Canadians’ perception of and support for U.S. President Donald Trump.

OPINION ON DONALD TRUMP

  • 15% of Canadians would vote for Donald Trump if they could vote in the U.S. election today. In comparison, 18% preferred him over Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in last November’s survey.
  • Trump’s support is highest in Alberta (23%) and lowest in the Atlantic provinces (8%).
  • While 79% of Canadians have a negative opinion of Donald Trump and 12% have a positive opinion, there are still significant levels of agreement with some of his policy decisions.

LEVEL OF AGREEMENT WITH TRUMP’S POLICIES

  • 46% of Canadians agree with Trump’s decision to ban transgender individuals from women’s sports.
  • 40% agree with his decision to define that there are only two sexes legally.
  • 40% support his policy of deporting undocumented immigrants in the U.S.
  • 34% agree with the creation of a Ministry of Government Efficiency (the one led by Elon Musk).

METHODOLOGY

The results for this wave of research are based on online research conducted from March 7 to March 10, with a representative sample of 2,134 Canadian adults 18 years of age and older from Leger’s LEO panel.

The data was statistically weighted according to 2021 Canadian Census figures.

A margin of error cannot be associated with a non-probability sample in a panel survey, but for comparison purposes, a probability sample of 2,134 would have a margin of error of +/- 2.12%, 19 times out of 20.
