The State of the Pandemic – April 19, 2022

19 April 2022

THIS SURVEY EXPLORES CANADIANS’ PERSPECTIVES ON THE STATE OF THE PANDEMIC.

Our latest North American Tracker explored Canadians’ experiences with the COVID-19 pandemic, including whether they have had COVID-19 and the severity of their symptoms, if so.

We also explored the evolution of the state of the pandemic, including how Canadians rate their mental health and their fear of contracting the virus.

This survey is conducted in collaboration with the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) and published in the Canadian Press. This series of surveys is available on Leger’s website.

The State of the Pandemic

  • 22% of Canadians report that they have or have had COVID-19 (whether they tested positive or not).
  • 57% of Canadians who report that they have or have had COVID-19 rate their symptoms as mild. 20% indicate they had severe symptoms and had to stay in bed.
  • 55% of Canadians think the worst of the COVID-19 crisis is behind us, an increase of 9 percentage points since February 7.
  • The proportion of Canadians who are personally afraid of contracting COVID-19 is trending downward again.

METHODOLOGY

This web survey was conducted from April 8 to April 10, 2022, with 1,538 Canadians, 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel.

A margin of error cannot be associated with a non-probability sample in a panel survey. For comparison, a probability sample of 1,538 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20.

THIS REPORT CONTAINS THE RESULTS FOR THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS AND MORE!

  • Are you or have you been infected with COVID-19 (whether you tested positively or not)?
  • How would you rate the severity of the symptoms for yourself personally?
  • Since the beginning of the COVID-19 crisis, how would you rate your mental health?
  • What statement best describes your personal opinion of the COVID-19 crisis for Canada?
  • Are you personally afraid of contracting COVID-19 (the coronavirus)?
