This survey explores Canadians’ and Americans’ views on reopening the Canada-US borders, vaccine lotteries and vaccine passports.

We explored whether Canadians and Americans feel the borders should be completely reopened, whether they support incentive programs like vaccine lotteries to encourage vaccination and whether they support imposing vaccine passports.

This survey is conducted in collaboration with the Association for Canadian Studies (ACS) and published in the Canadian Press. This series of surveys is available on Leger’s website.

Reopening the Borders

  • The greatest proportion (66% of Canadians and 46% of Americans) think that to enter their country from the United States (among Canadians) or from Canada (among Americans), travellers should need to be fully vaccinated (two doses).

Vaccine Lotteries and Obligations to Get Vaccinated

  • 50% of Canadians and 46% of Americans support using incentive programs like vaccine lotteries to encourage people to get vaccinated.
  • Canadians (66%) are more likely than Americans (41%) to feel that those who get vaccinated should have greater freedoms than those who do not.

  • Canadians and Americans* would be most comfortable participating in outdoor activities, going to work and/or gatherings with their friends/family knowing unvaccinated people may be present.

Comfort With Participating in Activities Knowing That Unvaccinated People May Be Present

  • 81% of Canadians and 63% of Americans think receiving a COVID-19 vaccine should be mandatory for all health care professionals and employees of hospitals and other health care facilities.

Vaccine Passports

  • 58% of Canadians and 37% of Americans support imposing a vaccine passport for all essential and non-essential activities.

METHODOLOGY

This web survey was conducted from July 16, 2021 to July 18, 2021 with 1,529 Canadians and 1,001 Americans, 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel.

For comparison, a probability sample of 1,529 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.51%, 19 times out of 20, while a probability sample of 1,001 would have a margin of error of ±3.09%, 19 times out of 20.

  • There has been some public debate on how Canadians/Americans who are vaccinated and unvaccinated Canadians/Americans should be treated as things begin to reopen. Below are two points of view on the subject. Please indicate which one is closest to your own opinion.
  • Would you be comfortable participating in the following activities knowing that unvaccinated persons may be present?
  • Do you agree or disagree with the imposition of a vaccination passport for all essential and non-essential activities?
