The Top Personalities Who Left Their Mark on 2019

January 10, 2020

Many personalities left their mark on 2019, for better or for worse. As 2019 drew to a close, we asked Canadians which personality they think had the biggest impact on 2019.

For an overview and interpretation of the results, watch our short video below featuring Christian Bourque, Executive Vice-President at Leger.

WHO WERE THE TOP THREE PERSONALITIES THAT LEFT THEIR MARK ON 2019, ACCORDING TO CANADIANS?

In order, Donald Trump (38%), followed by Greta Thunberg (20%) and Justin Trudeau (12%), the prime minister of Canada.

HOW DO THE RESULTS VARY BY REGION?

When we look at the data based on where Canadians live, regional differences emerge. For example, in Atlantic Canada, Don Cherry ranks fourth. Premier François Legault ranks fairly high in Quebec. In Ontario, fourth place belongs to Premier Doug Ford. Out West? Jody Wilson-Raybould.

IN REALITY, THE GREATEST DIFFERENCE IS IN TERMS OF AGE…

Younger Canadians are more likely to indicate Greta Thunberg left the biggest mark, while in contrast, older Canadians are more likely to indicate Donald Trump was most influential.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

This online survey of 1,508 Canadians aged 18+ was conducted from December 20-24, 2019, using the Leger Opinion (LEO) online panel. The data are weighted to ensure a representative sample of the population. For comparison purposes only, a probability sample of n=1,508 would have a margin of error of +/- 2.5%, 19 times out of 20.
