Vacation Plans, Flight Delays and Airline Concerns

July 19, 2023

Leger recently surveyed Canadians and Americans about their vacation plans and perspectives on flight delays and other concerns related to airlines.

SOME OF THE KEY HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR SURVEY ON VACATION PLANS, FLIGHT DELAYS AND AIRLINE CONCERNS INCLUDE…

VACATION PLANS

  • A nearly identical proportion of Canadians (35%) and Americans (34%) plan to go on vacation this summer.
  • More Canadians (33%) than Americans (20%) indicate that inflation and the current economic climate have impacted their vacation plans this year.

FLIGHT DELAYS AND AIRLINE CONCERNS

  • Americans (46%) are more likely than Canadians (39%) to think airlines are reliable in terms of adhering to their departure and arrival schedules.
  • 59% of Canadians and 52% of Americans who have taken at least one flight in the last year have experienced flight delays. 21% and 20% respectively have experienced flight cancellations.
  • 56% of Canadians and 35% of Americans agree that they are trying only to book direct flights going forward due to concerns over flight delays and missed connections. However, more Americans (40%) than Canadians (25%) say this statement does not apply to them.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A web survey was conducted among 1,526 Canadians and 1,000 Americans 18 years of age or older. Respondents were randomly recruited using Leger’s LEO online panel.
  • The data was collected from July 14 to 26, 2023.
  • Technically, a margin of error should not be associated with a non-probability sample (Web panel in this case). For comparison purposes, a probability sample of this size would yield a margin of error no greater than ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20 for the Canadian sample and ±3.1%, 19 times out of 20 for the American sample.
  • The results were weighted according to age, gender, mother tongue, region, education and presence of children in the household in order to ensure a representative sample of the Canadian population and according to age, gender, region, education, ethnicity and number of people in the household in order to ensure a representative sample of the American population.
