Would Canadians Pass the Canadian Citizenship Test?

June 28, 2023

Leger recently conducted a survey to explore whether Canadians would pass the Canadian citizenship test if they took it today.

To pass the Canadian citizenship test, candidates must give the right answer to at least 15 of the 20 questions asked. We asked respondents 10 random questions from the test and scored their answers.

ONLY 23% OF CANADIANS WOULD PASS THE CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP TEST.

In our survey, only 23% of Canadians answered at least 7 of the random questions correctly, with 77% answering 6/10 or fewer questions correctly.

The average score obtained by Canadians was 49%.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A web survey was conducted among 1,512 Canadians 18 years of age or older. Respondents had the option of completing the survey in English or in French and were randomly recruited using Leger’s LEO online panel.
  • The data was collected from June 23 to 25, 2023.
  • Technically, a margin of error should not be associated with a non-probability sample (Web panel in this case). However, for comparative purposes, a probability sample of 1,512 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.51%, 19 times out of 20.
  • The results were weighted according to age, gender, mother tongue, region, education and presence of children in the household in order to ensure a representative sample of the Canadian population.
