Crime and Violence in Alberta, Provincial Politics and More

April 4, 2023

Leger recently surveyed Albertans about Alberta politics, including their perspectives on the causes of crime and violence in Alberta, whether things are going in the right or wrong direction in the province, who they think would make the best premier of Alberta and more.

SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS OF OUR SURVEY ON CRIME AND VIOLENCE IN ALBERTA AND PROVINCIAL POLITICS INCLUDE…

  • If a provincial election were held today, 47% of decided voters would vote for the NDP and 44% would vote for the UCP.
  • 36% of Albertans believe Rachel Notley would make the best Premier of Alberta, followed by Danielle Smith (29%).
  • 53% of Albertans feel things in Alberta are going in the wrong direction.
  • 68% of Albertans think the level of crime and violence in Alberta has gotten worse compared to pre-pandemic.
  • Albertans think socioeconomic conditions (39%), drug addiction (38%) and insufficient penalties (36%) are the top reasons for the increase of crime and violence in Alberta.
  • 58% of Albertans disagree with the idea of creating a provincial police force to replace the RCMP in communities they currently police.
  • Fixing the cost of living and improving health care delivery are the two most important issues to Albertans when thinking about which party to vote for in the upcoming provincial election.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A total of n=1,001 online surveys were conducted among Albertans aged 18 or older via Leger’s LEO panel.
  • The survey was conducted from March 24 to 27, 2023, using computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) technology.
  • Using data from the 2021 Census, the results were weighted according to age, gender, and region in order to ensure a representative sample of the population.
  • As a non-random internet survey, a margin of error is not reported. If the data were collected through a random sample, the margin of error for a sample size of n=1,001 would be ±3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
