British Columbia Back to School Survey

October 5, 2020

From September 18-20, 2020, Leger conducted an online survey among British Columbia parents of school-age children.

Some of the topics that the survey explores include:

  • Worries about the 2020-2021 school year
  • Wearing masks at school
  • Spending on back-to-school items
  • The effectiveness of implementing various provincial health guidelines
  • And more!

SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS OF OUR SURVEY INCLUDE:

  • Two-thirds (68%) of B.C. parents are worried about the 2020-2021 school year. As a result, 27% say their children are attending school at home.
  • Overall, attitudes toward wearing masks at school are positive.
  • 13% of B.C. parents of school-age children have already quit their job or reduced their work schedule, while 19% have considered quitting.
  • Two-thirds (65%) of B.C. parents of school-age children think that B.C. Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry effectively communicated plans for the 2020-2021 school year.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A total of 146 online surveys were conducted among British Columbia parents with school-age children via Leger’s online panel, LEO. The surveys were conducted from September 18-20, 2020.
  • As a non-random internet survey, a margin of error is not reported. If the data were collected through a random sample, the margin of error would be ±7.5%, 19 times out of 20.
  • Using data from the 2016 Census, results were weighted according to age, gender and region in order to ensure a representative sample of the population.
