Canadian Foreign Policy

Numerous conflicts and wars are currently occurring around the world. From October 20 to 22, 2023, we surveyed Canadians to better understand their opinions on the Government of Canada’s role in global conflicts and foreign affairs.

Some of the key highlights of our survey about Canadian foreign affairs include…

  • 57% of Canadians think that the Government of Canada should play a more visible role when it comes to the United Nations, 51% think the same about foreign diplomacy, 48% about foreign aid, and 43% about military intervention or support.
  • 42% of Canadians feel the Government of Canada should be less aligned with American foreign policy. However, 49% believe that being a close ally to the United States helps Canada internationally, while 29% think it hurts Canada.
  • When it comes to the conflict in Ukraine, 30% of Canadians think that the Government of Canada should increase its efforts in regard to humanitarian aid and its diplomatic efforts to support Ukraine. A smaller proportion think that the it should increase its efforts for military training (23%) or supplying ammunition and other military supplies (20%).
  • 45% of Canadians believe that the Government of Canada should maintain the current levels of financial aid to Ukraine.

Methodology

This web survey was conducted from October 20 to 22, 2023, with 1,521 Canadians 18 years of age or older, randomly recruited from LEO’s online panel.

A margin of error cannot be associated with a non-probability sample in a panel survey. For comparison, a probability sample of 1,548 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.51 %, 19 times out of 20.
