Around 40% of Canadians and Americans use wearable technology, but Americans tend to be more consistent users (34% compared to 28% in Canada). Smartwatches remain the most popular choice, widely used for tracking physical activity, monitoring heart rate, and improving sleep quality.

Health Benefits of Smart Watches and Wearables

Among users, increased physical activity is the most reported benefit, with 53% of Americans and 46% of Canadians noting positive changes in their fitness habits. Additionally, sleep tracking has led to better rest patterns, with some users reporting lower stress levels and healthier diets due to their smartwatches and wearables.

However, despite the growing benefits, cost remains the most significant barrier to adoption, with over half of Canadians and Americans expressing concerns about the price of these devices. Americans are also more concerned with data privacy and security, making transparency in data handling an essential factor for wearable technology companies. 

Moreover, trust in wearable health data management varies between the two countries. Healthcare providers are considered the most trustworthy entities, with 72% of Americans willing to share their data compared to 61% of Canadians. However, financial institutions receive much less trust, as only 32% of Canadians and 50% of Americans are open to sharing their wearable data with banks or insurers. Many users, particularly in the U.S., expect incentives like insurance premium discounts in exchange for sharing their health data.

Looking ahead, users are seeking enhancements in wearable technology, with key demands including advanced health monitoring, longer battery life, mental health tracking, and improved data security. These features could drive even greater adoption and satisfaction among consumers. Americans are more optimistic about the future of smartwatches and wearables, with 82% expecting greater integration into daily life over the next five years, compared to 73% of Canadians.
