Albertans’ Views on a Provincial Pension Plan

January 22, 2024

From January 12 to 15, 2024, we surveyed Albertans to know more about their perspectives on the Alberta government’s plan to withdraw Alberta from the Canadian Pension Plan and replace it with a new provincial pension plan and the Canadian Pension Plan (CPP) itself.

Some of the key highlights of our survey include…

  • Support for Alberta’s decision to develop their provincial pension plan separate from the CPP has decreased by 5 points since October 2023, due primarily to a decrease in support among UCP supporters.
  • 69% of Albertans reported that they are familiar with the UCP’s proposed plan to withdraw Alberta from the CPP and create Alberta’s own pension plan, down slightly by 2 points since October 2023.
  • Overall, Albertans appear to feel less informed of the provincial government’s planregarding the Alberta Pension Plan than they did 3 months ago. This may be a contributing factor to lower support levels, particularly among current UCP voters.

METHODOLOGY

An online survey was conducted among 1,012 Albertans, 18 years of age or older, from January 12 to 15 2024. The data was weighted according to the Canadian census figures for age, gender, and region within the province.

No margin of error can be associated with a non-probability sample.  However, for comparative purposes, a probability sample of 1,012 respondents would have a margin of error of ±3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
