British Columbians’ Views on the Federal and Provincial Budgets

April 19, 2021

From April 2-4, 2021, on behalf of Postmedia, Leger conducted an online survey among British Columbians to explore their views on the 2021 provincial and federal budgets.

SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS OF OUR SURVEY ON THE FEDERAL AND PROVINCIAL BUDGETS INCLUDE…

  • Seven-in-ten (70%) British Columbians are concerned about the possibility of long-term tax increases as a result of government spending to support individuals and businesses during the pandemic.
  • Not all British Columbians are confident that John Horgan and the NDP will deliver a budget that helps British Columbia and its residents.
  • Residents think economic recovery and the pandemic response should be the top priorities for the federal and provincial government budgets.
  • If taxes must be increased in B.C., residents would rather see these increases on customs duties or tariffs on certain imported and exported products.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • 1,004 residents of British Columbia aged 18 or older were surveyed online using Leger’s online panel, LEO, from April 2-4, 2021.
  • Using data from the 2016 Census, the results were weighted according to age, gender, and region in order to ensure a representative sample of the population in British Columbia.
  • No margin of error can be associated with a non-probability sample. However, for comparative purposes, a probability sample of 1,004 respondents would have a margin of error of ±3.1%, 19 times out of 20.
