Perspectives on Canada Day: A Postmedia – Leger Poll

June 28, 2021

From June 18-20, 2021, on behalf of Postmedia, Leger conducted an online survey among Canadians to explore their perspectives on Canada Day, the return to “normal” and public health orders.

SOME OF THE KEY FINDINGS OF OUR SURVEY ON CANADA DAY, THE RETURN TO “NORMAL” AND PUBLIC HEALTH ORDERS INCLUDE…

  • Fewer than half of Canadians perceive Canada as one of the best countries in the world to live in.
  • Two-thirds of Canadians feel Canada’s history is something to celebrate.
  • More than half of Canadians say their level of Canadian pride hasn’t changed compared to five years ago.
  • Fewer than half of Canadians plan on displaying the Canadian flag this Canada Day.
  • With all the questions about Canada and its historical record, 77% of Canadians think it would be best not to cancel Canada Day this year, 14% think it would be best to cancel it, and 10% are unsure.

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • 1,542 residents of Canada aged 18 or older were surveyed online using Leger’s online panel, LEO, from June 18-20, 2021.
  • Using data from the 2016 Census, the results were weighted according to age, gender, and region in order to ensure a representative sample of the population.
  • As a non-probability internet survey, a margin of error is technically not to be reported. If the data were collected through a random sample, the margin of error for a sample of n~1,500 would be ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20.
