The Conservative Party Leadership Race

March 11, 2022

On behalf of Le Journal de Montreal, TVA, QUB and the National Post, Leger surveyed Canadians aged 18 or older who are eligible to vote in Canada about their perspectives on the Conservative party leadership race and their voting intentions for the next federal election.

SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR SURVEY ON THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADERSHIP RACE AND FEDERAL VOTING INTENTIONS INCLUDE…

  • If a federal election were held tomorrow, 33% of decided voters would vote for Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party of Canada, 28% would vote for Candice Bergen’s Conservative Party of Canada, and 22% would vote for Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party of Canada.
  • 41% of Conservative voters think Pierre Polievre would be the best Conservative Party of Canada leader. The same proportion (41%) feel Poilievre has the best chance of winning against Trudeau in the next election.
  • According to Conservative voters, it is most important that the next party leader keeps a balanced budget and avoids deficits (76%), defends national interests first (66%) and has political experience (66%).
  • 52% of Conservative voters think it does not matter if the next leader of the Conservative Party is perfectly bilingual.

Conservative Party Leadership Race: The Best Leader

SURVEY METHODOLOGY

  • A web survey was conducted among 1,591 Canadians 18 years of age or older and eligible to vote in Canada. Respondents had the option of completing the survey in English or in French and were randomly recruited using LEO’s online panel.
  • The data was collected from March 4 to March 6, 2022.
  • No margin of error can be associated with a non-probability sample (web panel in this case). However, for comparative purposes, a probability sample of 1,591 respondents would have a margin of error of ±2.5%, 19 times out of 20.
  • The results were weighted according to gender, age, mother tongue, region, education and presence of children in the household in order to ensure a representative sample of the Canadian population.
